Pitching control is the ability to throw pitches inside the strike zone. The definition of pitching command is the ability to throw pitches in your chosen location, which can be in or out of the strikezone. And that gets further refined into the areas of command by different pitcher levels, where the areas are comprised of single or multiple 5"x7" rectangles.
There are a lot of videos around where they talk about a player’s command, when they really are talking about control. Control is a step towards developing command, but they’re very different things, especially when pitching at a high level.
Having only control and throwing a strike at 95mph down the middle is going to get hit out of the park at high levels of play. We’ve all seen it happen countless times. Having command and dotting the black or a known weak location for the hitter is where success is.
Command is not throwing strikes, that’s Control.
Command is not throwing “quality strikes”, “quality” depends on the pitch and location that was thrown before , and sometimes the right pitch should be outside the strikezone.
Command is throwing to the location of your choice, in or out of the strike zone. With Command Trakker that’s choosing a letter or number to hit, and hitting it. Control with Command Trakker is hitting the green numbers.

With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. Velocity is no longer the separator at higher levels. It’s no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today.
To improve command, you first have to be able to measure it, and that's why you need Command Trakker. You can use the Command Trakker app with Command Trakker Pro smart pitching targets, Command Trakker Classic targets, or any ordinary 9 pocket pitching net.
( 9 Pocket Pitching Nets you choose the intended and actual impact locations )
Command Trakker Pro is a smart pitching target that charts and grades pitching command and control. Now Command Trakker Pro provides the tool you've been missing to automatically measure and train pitching command to develop pitchers, not just throwers. Command Trakker Pro creates a new category of pitching development technology - smart pitching targets to measure and develop pitching control, pitching command, and pitch sequencing. It uses Apple or Android phones or tablets to connect to the smart WiFi Command Trakker to track the intended location and actual impact location of pitches on the target. It then provides an instant impact location with detailed scoring and other information to evaluate pitching command, pitching control, and pitch sequencing.
Using state of the art technology, the AI-powered Command Trakker Pro automatically tracks and scores command and control, with miss direction, and more giving you instant real-time feedback.
Data is how we measure improvement, Command Trakker provides the data you need.
Durable and built to last, when you’re serious about pitching development and only the best will do.
No baseball technology can measure pitching command and intent as Command Trakker can. That's been the big missing part of pitcher development. Pitchers are working on throwing harder and more movement, but most have yet to be working on pitching command the way Command Trakker can help them. And you can use as many Command Trakker Pro targets in the same area as you want; they won't interfere with each other or other equipment because Command Trakker Pro doesn't use radar, video, Lidar, or LEDs. Command Trakker Pro uses a revolutionary new sensing technology that's way better than previous attempts at smart pitching targets and boy, have we patented it! Our system measures the location where the ball impacted the target, not a calculated estimate of the location, but the actual location. Command Trakker Pro is the most durable of all the targets available and provides the most realistic real-game strike zone.
Other systems measure where the ball went, but there is no visual target for the pitcher to see or any indication of where he intended to hit. So they are measuring a pitcher’s ability to guess where an invisible spot is , and then measuring his ability to hit that invisible spot. That method isn't suitable for measuring a pitcher's command; at most, it gauges their control, not their command.
Otherwise, Nolan Ryan would be undefeated. Ranking their importance in pitching, in this order, its Movement, Location, Change of Speeds, and Velocity, in that order. Velocity is essential, but the pitcher likelier to win is the pitcher that best locates and changes speeds. And winning the game is the most important stat of all.
With most pitchers throwing hard these days, command is now the separator for pitchers.
Locating pitches, executing pitches are all terms for command. Are you looking for the perfect tool to help pitchers develop their command and sequencing? Command Trakker Pro is the professional-grade smart pitching target you've been searching for. It utilizes patent-pending technology to automatically measure and track command and sequencing, and is used by MLB teams and top D1 teams.

Our baseball smart pitching targets are hand built in the USA - welded steel frame and a target image that can easily withstand thousands of baseball impacts. Command Trakker Pro weighs 95 pounds so you won't need any weights or sandbags to hold the target in place, and it's also compact at 32" x 41" x 5".
You can use as many Command Trakker Pro's side by side as you want; they won't interfere with each other because Command Trakker Pro doesn't use radar, video, Lidar, or LEDs. Command Trakker Pro uses a revolutionary new sensing technology that's way better than previous attempts at smart pitching targets and boy, have we patented it! Our system measures the location where the ball impacted the target, not a calculated estimate of the location, but the actual location.
It's fast and will get you lots of oohs and aahs, but it won't get you where you want to go. Command without good sequencing is like having a good steering wheel but driving blindfolded.
Add a whole new dimension when evaluating pitchers. Now you can provide a unique "Pitching Command Score" with the measurements your other equipment offers, such as velocity, spin rate, and movement - significant added value for camps and other evaluations. So, if you know the velocity, spin rate, and movement on a pitcher's fastball, now you can know what his pitching command score is for his fastball to understand the pitch better. Or you can use it to find what renowned MLB pitching coach Scott Emerson calls, what is their "Useful velocity."
Command Trakker data files will allow you to be among the first to analyze your Hawkeye, Trackman, or Rapsodo data recorded at the same time as Command Trakker data to see effects on command by metrics such as stride, release point, number of pitches, days rest, etc. using the Command Trakker's CSV session file output format. This opens a whole new way to evaluate and maximize your pitchers.
Command Trakker has more significant applications besides pitching, such as placing the elevated target on first base during infield practice and training to hit center #5. That will allow you to measure and train to improve infielder throws. Another is placing the target to the first base side of second base and measuring and training catcher throws to the second base.
Initially, pitchers might struggle to hit within the strike zone consistently, so they first practice on their pitching Control Score. Once they have mastered their pitching control, then they can work up to different pitching Command Levels, which are defined by hitting inside an area of 1 or more 5"x7" rectangles selected based on the level. Then ultimately, they build up to the highest pitching Command Level, which is being able to hit into a single 5x7" rectangle selected. And all along, specifying what locations you miss are “good misses”, i.e., executing your idea.
Once the highest Command Level is reached, the next step is knowing what sequences of pitches and locations, to use against particular batters and situations, i.e., pitching, not just throwing. This is where the Scripted Bullpen routines can help them learn how to apply their pitching command.
Command can also be a crucial way to detect or work back from injuries, because when command is off there could be either potential injuries or mechanics that are off.
This is why a Pitcher needs to master command of all their pitches, and execute a specific strategy to utilize their pitches. Command Trakker provides you with the tool to train and measure pitching command and strategies, and also lets you select which squares are "Good Misses", so you can train your pitchers always to execute the idea of their strategy even if their pitching command has missed their intended spot.
Pitchers can train more effectively with Command Trakker than with a catcher. It instantly shows the impact location of the pitch. A catcher will move his glove to catch the ball a foot or more from the intended location for the pitch, and it will appear that the pitcher is doing well. But the pitcher is missing his spots and not developing command or control.
Batters can train for better strike zone and lane awareness, leading to better swing decisions. Batters standing in the batter's box next to Command Trakker facing the pitcher are asked to identify which square the ball impacted. We based the dimensions and location of the Command Trakker strike zone off the Universal Strike Zone article our founder Wayne Boyle wrote for Baseball Prospectus which is in the SABR library. This represents the real universal strike zone, and Command Trakker is preset to the correct height of the Universal Strike one.
Command Trakker Pro doesn't need any complex setup or calibration. Turn the target on and connect the app and you're ready to grade and track pitching command and pitching control.
Command Trakker Pro has built-in sensors that measure the temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and impact strength. The app displays those measurements just below the main target screen. They are also saved for each pitch in the CSV file for the session. This is useful for determining the effects of temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure on command and control. The app also displays “Strength,” which provides a number representing the relative impact strength. The higher the number, the harder the impact.
Command Trakker Pro uses a rechargeable power bank that should provide use for a month of use before needing to be recharged. No cables are connected to the target during the Command Trakker's operation.
Command Trakker Pro uses standard 2.4GHZ WiFi in Station mode, Access Point mode, or both. In Station mode, you can connect your Command Trakker Pro targets to your network and monitor whichever target you want. Access Point mode is typically used when you don't have a local network, such as on a baseball field. In that case, the Command Trakker Pro target becomes its WiFi network to which you connect your iOS or Android phone or tablets. You can have as many Command Trakker Pro's that you want operating in the same area, and they won't interfere with each other.
The Command Trakker front target is polycarbonate, also known as Lexan (the F-22 fighter jet canopy is Lexan). To clean the front, use mild soap, such as a dishwashing liquid. Clean polycarbonate gently using warm water with a few drops of liquid detergent and a microfiber cloth. Put plenty of water in your bucket to rinse the cloth frequently. This prevents any dirt and grit from scratching the polycarbonate. Don't use any cleaning products with harsh chemicals, including bleach, ammonia, and alcohol (but 70% Isopropyl Alcohol solution is OK). If it's too harsh for skin contact, it's too harsh for the polycarbonate front. Plastic headlight restorer polish also works well to clean the front of the target, such as

Here's a video of how to clean your Command Trakker. In this video it shows a target that has been hit over 3,500 times and cleaned once a month. Cleaning Video
A big problem with other targets is that they don’t resemble anything near what a real game strike zone is. So, pitchers using those targets practice throwing to a strike zone they won't have in a real game, and that's a big problem.
We based the dimensions and location of the Command Trakker strike zone off the Universal Strike Zone article our founder Wayne Boyle wrote for Baseball Prospectus, which is in the SABR library.
The green numbers on Command Trakker represent the real universal strike zone, and the letters outside the strike zone represent the shadow zone. Also, Command Trakker is preset to the correct height of the Universal Strike Zone.
Command Trakker's target area is 32" wide and 41" tall, plus it is standing on 11" high legs. The green strike zone area (Numbers) is set up for a typical 6'1" batter at 17" wide, and the bottom of the green strike zone is 19" from the ground, and the top of the green strike zone is 41" from the ground.
The outer brown part of the target area (Letters) is the shadow zone.
